Deserted Sydney

I had to drive into the Sydney CBD today to get some things from the office.  I parked in Clarence Street and walked two and a half blocks to the corner of George and Kings Streets.  In the fifteen minutes it took to leave the car and return to it, I saw less than 2 dozen people in the streets.  Looking up and down George Street, it was completely deserted.  The Harbour Bridge had almost no traffic on it and the expressways in and out had very few cars.  It looked like a ghost town or something out of "On the Beach" by Neville Shute.  I have seen more foot traffic on a Sunday afternoon in country towns.  It was so sad to see all the businesses which would be suffering.

In Manly so many retail premises are for lease.

The old Manly saying:

'Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care'

Needs to be rephrased:

Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles of despair.
