Water, shelter and food. it is said you can last, three hours without shelter, three days without water, three weeks without food - but I would hate to have to go one day.
Francois, Depending on your willingness to tough it out or rough it - it depends on where you are going, at which time of year, and local weather conditions - as we usually go with a fully stocked caravan that has all the facilities of a modern house, it is purely academic.
After the basic three, many would consider their wine/beer, their music and books essential.
Personally I like to ensure I can have my campfire, albeit in a fire pit/grill - and the company of my Child-bride.

Years ago, a group of friends were camped at the Geehi Airstrip in the snowy Mtns - a superb place. We took our camper trailer, but everyone else was camped in tents. My wife reckoned it was roughing it because we had no power or hot water showers... We camped right beside the river - and in the morning, most of the others had to walk past our van to get to the river for water. We had quite a few visitors that morning and one of them noted that my wife had a tea cosy on the teapot. Doesn't everyone who goes camping have a cosy for their teapot???
I cant wait to be a "newbie". Next week, maybe. I will do my first solo in a van (did many in cars) and maybe after a while I should invite a dog to share my adventures! I just cant go without freedom and dogs.
The 5 things I need when leaving the home at any time are.
Car Keys... Wallet....Phone.... Glasses...Hearing aids.
And of course
The love of my life.
Speaking of my love, I will never put my hand in her handbag. No more comment needed.
