In South Africa an antivaxxer is most likely to be white, tertiary educated and 65+ years old, ie someone like me.

Factors influencing vaccine acceptance:

- Race: White adults were least accepting, with only 56% willing or probably willing to be vaccinated, compared to 69% for Black African adults, 68% for Indian adults and 63% for Coloured adults.

- Education: Those with less than matric-level education were generally more open to receiving a vaccine (72%) than those who have completed matric (62%) or have a tertiary education (59%).

- Age: Support for vaccination increases with age- people 55 and older were more likely to report that they would take a vaccine than those aged 18 to 24 (74% versus 63%). However, issues pertaining to age may be more complex, as acceptance was 78% for those aged 54 to 64 but dropped off sharply to 48% among those 65 and older.

In 2020 "there were 898 deaths from COVID-19, ranking as the 38th leading cause of death."

It would appear that the various containment measures by our governments were responsible for the low number of COVID deaths. These same restrictions also contributed to 1000 less influenza deaths. Now that mask mandates, lockdowns and various other restrictions have been lifted, we can expect infections and deaths to rise. Remember that the latest wave of COVID infections was triggered by an unmasked, unvaccinated limousine driver. One wonders how many people would be alive if he had taken appropriate precautions.

Luck has played a part as has lockdowns, masks, and vaccinations but as some others have said we live on an island.

As a country with good positive leadership we could have closed the outside borders and we all would have lived a close to normal life.
So some businesses might have lost a bit from no overseas visitors but the domestic market could have been encouraged to support at least some of these companies even if we used the money we waisted on quarantine hotels and in some cases 18 months of lockdowns.
The govt insisted on bringing the disease to our shores and then offer meagre support to those that have been put out of work.

We havent learnt have we.
The government is lying to the Aus public telling them all overseas travellers will be tested and be negative before coming in.

The real worry is that NSW will take a wealth-before-health approach. Perrottet's casual approach doesn't inspire me at all. Which medical advice is telling him that current vaccines will be effective against new variants? All the news sources I've been reading say that experts don't yet know much about Omicron. Maybe they should consult Perrottet.

It looks like it's wealth-before-health for the feds as well. Morrison and Joyce don't seem to be in any hurry.

The Prime Minister says he plans to call a meeting of state and territory leaders today or tomorrow to discuss how to respond to the Omicron variant, but it is "too early" to make decisions about reinstating quarantine before Christmas.

A friend from South Africa said that 'it's been reported that Omicron is more contagious but with less severe symptoms'. If this is the case it may become like the common cold corona viruses as predicted as an option by the epidemiologists.

I don't know where my friends information came from but I'll wait for the report from the epidemiologists before making any decisions regarding Omicron.

It was reported by the African doctor who discovered it and was treating patients with the new strain.

She found that it was very contagious amongst the unvaccinated but had very mild symptoms.

Her name is Dr Angelique Coetzee.

we have had minimal deaths from covid in Australia compared to overseas , with the international borders opening to the northern hemisphere right in their peak flu season we could see a spike in flu deaths that we did not have last year . now that we have reached our required % rate and anyone who wants a vaccine can get one , restrictions should be lifted then we can see if the vaccines work
