G'day all, like many of us on here I use public washing machines for bigger items or more than a quick rinse of a couple of shirts etc. I have been using a branded sanitiser in the final rinse cycle to help kill any unwanted hitch hikers. It has been suggested instead of using expensive supermarket brands to start using around 50ml-80ml of white vinegar.
My question to you knowledgeable people is, what say you and does anyone already use vinegar in the final rinse? For those of of you that are lucky and don't do the washing, what does the minister for finance and war say?
Keep Safe out there.

I think it might be other peoples crabs that they may of left in the washing machine that Doug is wanting to kill. ( but I have been wrong once before )
I'm sure Doug would only have very friendly crabs. Landy

I big fan of white vinegar, it all started when I was a teen having it on my hot potato chips.
Yes, we do put a cup full of vinegar in the tray near where you put the soap powder.
The washing machine guy said our washer was one of cleanest internal he had seen. So that was a plus.
Vinegar is cheap $1.20, scientific reasons, I have know idea, we don't have any nasties in our clothes as far as we are aware of.
2013 I retired, that makes it 8 years I have been loading the washing machine . I did load the washing with my work clothes before but vinegar would not of made much difference to them I suspect.
I don't know the scientifics of deodorising/ sanitisation but I put eucalyptus oil in the rinse. However a podiatrist told me to put tea tree oil in the wash to kill fungas! Happy to hear others experiences.
White vinegar in the rinse restores the pH balance after the washing powder, it'll probably kill a few bugs but not all. As mentioned it will also keep the machine clean, I use it instead of commercial rinse aid products. $1.60/L at Safeway.

White vinegar in the final rise, just wait till it's almost full and preferably in a jug full of water just in case the neat vinegar marks the clothes. Then hang the clothes in the sun or use the dryer for a final germ/bug kill. As mentioned above It also leaves the clothes soft and the machine clean. Trust me, my oldest granddaughter calls me 'laundry super gran'. Then have fish and chips for tea lol.
Once, before adding clothes to washer i looked inside and saw live silver fish. Went to next washer n it was filfthy because someone had washed dog bedding. We bought a washer after That.

Yes, there are quite a lot of those travelling with a dog who do not give a thought to others who might want to use the communal facilities.
Regarding vinegar, my partner adds a good dose of Bicarb Soda and vinegar after the first rinse cycle. The combination can be used on its own for delicate items. The vinegar sets off a foaming action in the Bi Carb and is great for hand washing.
