Trying to get the old union back ? There economy is around 10th in the world . Aust to give some perspective is 13th . Their gov seems to do a lot of bluffing !! Long term it could leave Russians worse off ? Its basically a civil war !!

I don't think anyone will ever find a solution to the issues in eastern Europe. Even before the time of the Russian Revolution led to the forming of the Soviet Union, through to the annexing of countries in World War Two, through the collapse of the USSR in the 1990s to the independence struggles of former member countries, it just goes on. They all have their own agendas and I don't think that anyone of them has the guy in the white hat in control. Total head kickers and tyrants such as Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Chernenko all came from the Ukraine and I don't recall any of those blokes being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

I think as to how far the Russians advance after the Ukraine is a matter for NATO and that we should just stay right out of it. I think we should impose sanctions in line with other countries and offer humanitarian assistance but stay right out of the fisticuffs. We have a long history of being dragged in to fight other countries battles whilst they offer little resistance. A total trade and financial sanction imposed by the free world on not only the Russian state but also its free enterprise businesses and its oligarchs may well be the answer to Mr Putin.

What I can't understand is, why have not NATO, the UN, America or Uk not stood up and said that Putin and his entire government will be, in the event of an invasion with loss of civilian life, be all up on War Crime charges ?

I don't think there is much chance of that happening Wanda. NATO is pretty useless and relies on the USA to give it any credibility. The UN has Russia and China with the power to veto any resolution that the Council may wish to pass and I think the UK is a bit tired of fighting other European countries' battles.

I agree with the sanctions but unfortunately I think there are too many players with massive influence over governments who do not wish to see their fortunes affected.

is that not how the second world war got started people saying "lets keep out of it, none of our business" if Putin gets away with this i would think CHINA will see it as green light . I hope the sanctions work

the NATO card is what Putin is using as an excuse ,the Ukraine is not part of NATO

Finland may be the next target for Vlad the Thug as they were a Russian Duchy in 1917? and they are not in Nato, it looks grim for them as well.

We have no military alliance with Ukraine, Dogbox. There has been no request for us to intervene militarily either. Ukraine is not part of NATO so it is also not their fight. It is an entirely different scenario to WW2 in that the British and French became involved because they did have alliances, which dragged us in because we had alliances with Britain. If Putin goes further than Ukraine then it is an entirely different matter and I daresay others will then be involved.

No doubt the guy is a nutcase, power hungry. Made sure he would be the 'leader' till he died by changing the laws.
China did the same. Must be a dictatorship thing.
I am curious as to whether or not, taking him out would resolve the problem.
No more leader. How would the rest of the world react, especially China.

Looks like sanctions are being imposed on Russia by some whilst China is opening up to trade with Russia starting with Russian wheat. How far and how quick is this going to go ???

I suspect that this invasion is the culmination of years of misjudgment by the West. Apparently the powers that be learned nothing from WW1 and WW2. Germany was humiliated by the occupying powers after WW1. This provided fertile ground for nationalism, and this was stoked by Hitler. The same thing happened when the USSR collapsed. A drunken Boris Yeltsin became the west's dancing bear. That must have grated on Putin. Ukraine is his revenge.

I don't think Ukraine will be any pushover for Putin. They are extremely tough people as Adolph found out. I think the biggest issue Putin will have is his own people and the civil unrest in Russia not only over the invasion but the economic sanctions.

Once you get the party offside the Kremlin moves swiftly on its leaders. I see there are already demonstrations in several Russian cities and there is also a fair proportion of the military who call Ukraine home.

Interesting times. I just wish our motor mouth would impose the sanctions and leave the tough talk to others. What is he going to do, attack them with a welder or give them a good hair washing.

I visited Finland in 2000. At the time, the Finnish citizens that I met, hated the Russians. They easily expressed concern about the Russians just over the border. The citizen males that I met, were all accepting of using arms against Russians. They all had some military training, like National Service. I asked if they had enough arms and ammunition. They said, "Yeah, we have the guns"

My sympathies are for Ukraine at this time.

Sorry Buzz, but that was just a convenient excuse for his action. He would have done it anyway, at sometime during the coming months.

He is intent on rebuilding the Soviet Union as it once was, and becoming a World power again. He sees himself as becoming the most powerful man in the World, whether by good means or force and fear. I think the second is more likely.
