Russia invades Ukraine

Russia invaded Ukraine because the Ukrainian President wanted to join NATO. If he didn't ask to join, Russia would not have invaded.

that whole area has been in turmoil for hundreds of years while we are watching the disaster unfold in eastern europe, it would not surprise me to see north korea do something as no one is taking any notice of kim these days

They will b a ready food source. Stash some cash, water  and food away. Its coming. sorry to all those that love their fur babies, but if people are starving ???

 Sorry, couldn't eat my dogs.

But I'll sure as hell eat one of my neighbours dog, and feed my ones with it too. Maybe feed my neighbours to them as well. Dogs would be happy, maybe I would be too.

I think the only winner here is China

Why?

American on the left still blame trump(will they get over their trump derangement syndrome?)
American on the right say bring back their oil and gas wells back online and stop buying Russian oil.
All that oil Americans don't buy goes to china, America pumps oil and gas to the world, price goes down, china wins again.

I only hope we in Australia are ready for something to happen once Vlad gets what he wants and China wants the same with Taiwan.

How long can Australia last once the Chinese are on the move, I think we would fold in a day!..

I don't think our Allies will help much, look at what they are promising Ukraine and the got zip..

Anyway, I hope it doesn't go that far and there is peace in our region.

Hasn't been going long but just seen what I would class as a war crimes incident. Guy driving along the road with a tank coming towards him. Tank swerves into the path of the car and over the top of it. Occupant was not shooting at the tank, just driving on his side of the road. Turns of the old guy inside was not badly hurt but took some time to get him out of the crumpled mess. Suggest anyone else that sees a tank driving towards them turn around and get out of the way of both the tank and their weapons.

 Graeme,

You comic is very true. And yes, ATM we would be lucky to last a week against Chins. IMO our defence is a joke and this is what we need to do.

1. Lease 3 or 4 nuke submarines ASAP.

2. Purchase or build about a 20 cans of sunshine. Deploy-able from land, sea and air. A great deterrent.

3. Buy lots more off the shelf aircraft.

4. Increase ammo production/storage.

5. Re invigorate the Army Reserve System and all participants store at home a rifle with 200 rounds and a couple of grenades.

6. Increase fuel storage in AU.

7. Start building ships, fast. We are able to do this.

Many will not agree. But IMO the world is changing fast and we are far from prepared.

Some very interesting stuff, as usual, on Al Jazeera:

Tough talking by Meddeved

Russia and the West are moving towards all out economic war

I note Germany has decided to supply arms to Ukraine and that Germany and Hungary have agreed to kick Russia out of SWIFT.

Although still on the far horizon I have a fear we could see a major was escalate from Ukraine.

When I turn the news on this morning it is being reported that Ukraine has fought back overnight and the attack by Russia has, at least for the moment, backed off a bit.
Puton is most definitely the 21st Century Hitler.

There is a video presently on the internet showing a Ukrainian motorist pulling up next to a stalled Russian tank. Google "Russian tank out of diesel talking to motorist" and you should be able to see it. The dialogue and friendly exchange gives a fair reflection of the mindset of many of these Russian troops. A vast majority have wives, girlfriends and other family members who either live in Ukraine or originate from Ukraine.

There is also another clip of the Ukrainian civilian woman telling the assembled Russian soldiers to "put sunflower seeds (the Ukrainian national flower) in your pockets. The flowers will bloom from where you fall."

I remember a Ukrainian friend of mine from school days whose father would tell us how he and the villagers fought the Nazis using pitchforks, clubs and their bare hands. These guys do not give up. Even if the troops end up overpowering the country it will become Afghanistan revisited for the Russians. The internal revolt back in Russia and the sanctions will hit hard. Their economy is not strong and is really only about as large as our own. Given that their income is mainly from oil, gas and agriculture, see how that goes when the world turns its collective back on trading with them.

It's a worry that China has been claiming Taiwan for so long and must be looking at how the present situation plays out in the Ukraine, nothing to discourage them so far and what better time for them to do it than right now?.

I think it is a completely different scenario with Taiwan, Peter. Ukraine was not a member of NATO and was part of the old Soviet bloc so the west was never going to intervene directly. Should the Russians be silly enough to try the same with a NATO country then it will be on. The USA has also stated that it would come to the assistance of Taiwan should China invade.

Additionally, the Chinese economy would be pretty grim if their assets were frozen and the rest of the world decided they did not have to repay the outstanding loans or trade with them.

A big concern in all of this is the situation where other countries could decide to pump up their chests and decide to attack some others.

North Korea and China come to mind immediately.

The problem with that is that while the USA have monitoring equipment and procedures in place to offer protection to others, Australia included, the President, Joe Biden is so doddery I am afraid it may be all over before he can get his pointer finger to the button.

President Joe Biden instructed the U.S. State Department to release up to an additional $350 million worth of weapons from U.S. stocks to Ukraine on Friday as it struggles to repulse a Russian invasion.

I find it interesting and stupid that the world leaders are saying "I am going to do this or I am going to do that". Wouldn't it be better to keep some things secret. Why tell the enemy that your going to pump more weapons in so they can prepare for their arrival or worse still beat the daylights out of the country before they arrive. Just saying.......

I think that is for their benefit with their own voters Gayle. There is usually a fair bit of self promotion to stem any criticism from the local voters that they are not doing enough. I think there would also be an amount of other support coming from the military that they keep to themselves.

I noticed on the news last night that the people fleeing Ukraine are predominantly women and children and some elderly. The men are choosing to remain and fight or offer resistance. It's a bit of a contrast to other crisis that occur in the world where countries are swamped by males seeking asylum whilst their families languish back at home.

I think the Russians will regret this invasion. With protests breaking out back in Russia, troops not wanting to be there, financial sanctions and a resistance from 44 million people being armed by the west, even if they overpower the Ukrainians initially, how will they maintain control.

A couple of brief interviews with russian soldiers, they were told they were in Ukraine for war games & Ukrainian will "surrender". They were not expecting to be actually killed.

Just wondering what percentage of soldiers were told this war game story.

They probably don't have the will to fight when lied to about why they are there.

Regardless of the outcome of this insane act, I think(hope) this is the end of Putin.
I cannot, or hope not, the world will have nothing to do with this mad man after this, again, regardless of the outcome.
The world will NOT be able to ignore what he has done, and, I think even his people will rise up and get rid of him one way or another. Sadly this may take some time, hopefully not though.

DMaxer, the men in the Ukraine are now banned from leaving their country, 18-60yr olds. Cant see too many of them complaining about that either
stay safe people

Stalin has soldiers shot who failed. Maybe the current Czar will continue the process.

Ironically, the man who imposed the discipline and ruthless treatment of the Russian soldiers who failed or tried to retreat during WW2 was none other than that great Ukrainian, Nikita Khrushchev carrying out Stalin's orders.

Nikita Khrushchev was born of Russian parents in Russia near the Ukrainian border in 1894, to my knowledge he is not Ukranian in any sense.

Careful not to over simplify the role and behaviour of Russia during the second world war Dmaxer.

Russia lost around 20,000,000 people to that war and was often fighting for its very survival; some terrible things were done on both sides... were they justified? Maybe, probably, unless one is placed into such situations my feeling is we should be very, very careful before passing a judgement.

Khrushchev was something (in Russian terms) of a reforming leader and denounced much of Stalin's brutality - for much of his rule Stalin was clinically insane.

Winston Churchill described Russia as "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma"; the country has so much history and so many cultures I think we, in the West, are quite mistaken in thinking of it as a single entity, keep in mind Russia covers *11* time zones.

I agree Mike, he was born near the Ukrainian border but then he and his family moved into the Ukraine and it was where he was raised and worked and from where he began his political career.

They claim him as one of "theirs".

When one considers what surely is the basic psychology of people such as Putin, Trump, Macron and probably most other major world leaders one wonders if it even possible for them to back down and acknowledge they have made a bad mistake especially with something as significant as Ukraine and if they cannot find a, to them, honorable, way to withdraw then what choice do they have except to push for their goal even harder?

Bad times.

That's my worry. And now Pigtin is talking nukes.

Mike, you will last 3 or 4 weeks longer than me and the boss. For us it will happen in a microsecond.
