What sort of quality controls are in place for meat that isn't farmed? What are the health risks?

Good question....from my observations the goats are simply rounded up from the bush and loaded directly into trucks. Goats are tough survivors, maybe they are not prone to diseases ? The amount of Goats being sold to market is huge. Last time I was in Cobar/NSW we were kept awake all night with the sound of a constant line up of trucks all filled to capacity with feral Goats going off to market.

When I worked as a Jackaroo, the grazier would kill a beat or pig for food. He'd check for liver fluke and a lot of other things parasites as he was butchering.

I'd imagine that the feral goats etcetera would be slaughtered in abattoirs  would also be checked for such things.

Yes, most likely, and one would hope so

100% they are checked. It's a heavily regulated industry.

Sorry, but the goats destroy the flora and the soil. And the neighbours get goats wether they like it, or not.

This is exactly why we have such a serious feral goat problem in this country.

Cheers,

Peter

Bingo, exactly .... they are a shocking environmental pest that should be 100% eradicated from all areas....along with Pigs, Deer, Camels, Dogs Cats etc etc I work for the Onkaparinga NP of SA through NPWS,  it took many years to eradicate the Goats entirely. They devastated so much native scrub and as a consequence so many native animals/birds as well. Call me a Greenie if you like....proud to give a dam.

All ferals should be eliminated from Australia. Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinction in the world so getting rid of cats, foxes, etcetera would be a big help.  (I'm not so sure about humans though biggrin)

I remember quite a few years back I owned property in the inland north of NSW that had a river frontage.  There were always feral cats about and the native fauna took a hammering. Eventually they managed to get some Army personnel to come onto the adjoining properties with permission to shoot the feral cats. Over a period of only two hours maximum they shot nearly 600 feral cats in the river frontage area of my land and the adjoining blocks of land. What amazed me besides the number killed was the size of some of them.

That's a great use of the defence force. They should be doing that whenever they're not off killing people somewhere.

Australian Forces deployed overseas actually save many lives Buzz. I have had overseas contracts in troubled countries and failed states where the ADF were deployed and they were brilliant at keeping warring factions apart whilst also gaining the trust of the locals.

I don't really know how they were engaged when they were used on our land as all I initially received was a request to allow them to enter and undertake eradication. The land was vacant and when I visited a few days later I saw some of the dead cats piled up and was told about the number by one of the neighbours who was present during the activity.

I'm not denying that. I just think that if they've got nothing to do then they can go out and practice shooting ferals. It's a win win situation. The ADF get to practice shooting and stalking, it keeps them busy and fit, and Australia has less ferals.

I visited a NP in NSW yesterday. Did 5 walks. About 8k.
I was disgusted, on 3 of them found lots of feral pig sign. Prints and dug up areas. Worst of all, on last walk spotted about 20 goats.

NSW Parks need a big kick in the arse.

Housos.

They used to live across the road from us when the house was rented. Now it's rented again they've moved back in again.
