If the prospect of getting closer to China seems appealing keep in mind that today is the 33rd anniversary of the day the Chinese government declared martial law and sent troops into the peaceful protest in Tiananmen Square and killed thousands (no one knows) of their citizens and then drove tanks over the bodies.
Whilst I am no fan of Xi Jinping or his treatment of the citizens, it was Deng Xiaping who was President at that time and the person who should be held responsible. I think each government no matter which country they represent should be held responsible for the period they have control, not a previous one when they had no control. It would otherwise be a bit like blaming Angela Merkel for what happened in the 1930-45 period.
I have a friend who was there in Tiananmen Square during that period who later came to live here. He cannot bring himself to speak about it.
