Is this yet another problem to our solution on fixing climate change with battery operated cars
Next time you change your sheets on the double bed, have a good long look at the size of the mattress. That is roughly the size of a battery for an Electric Vehicle. Some are bigger, some are smaller. That EV battery - say for a Tes*a - weights one thousand three hundred pounds; and - seeing as there are two thousand two hundred and forty pounds to an imperial (English) ton, you can see that the battery alone weights much more than a half ton. This last year new car sales were 2 million, down as I suspect the Eco Terrorists wished from 3.1 million couple years back. Now if EV sales replace ICE sales, as the Government have mandated, a years production of two million mattress sized batteries weighs MORE THAN ONE MILLION TONS of batteries; which takes some carrying about on (diesel) delivery trucks. Stacked one on top of the other, at an average say of five inches thick each, the pile of battery production for ONE YEAR would reach 833,333 feet into the sky. (Math - two million at five inches = 10,000,000 inches/12 = 833.333R feet)
833,333 feet divided by 5,280 is.....
157 miles high. Carry that lot about.
Now the powers-that-be, say that this is sustainable and renewable. After a suitable period, which is argued about: six years, eight years, ten years, EVERY YEAR thereafter you would have to recycle a hypothetical column of EV batteries more than one hundred and fifty seven miles high . Really. SO then, clearly you would have to re-allocate OR recycle two million batteries. They say we could power our homes with depleted EV batteries. Try and find room for a mattress sized object weighing half an imperial ton outside your house, or on the landing outside your flat, or terraced house! Plus cabling, connections etc etc. Once the domestic market has been satiated, the rest must be recycled, because that market would soon get saturated. EV batteries then must be transported, sited, connected or stripped down and recycled at the rate of FIVE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY BATTERIES EVERY DAY WITHOUT FAIL. Of every year, forever. If sales go back to 3.1 million.....well work it out for yourself...my brain hurts.
But, how much power - how many sunbeams and sea breezes - would it take to transport or recycle TWO MILLION BATTERIES EVERY YEAR ----- FOREVER??
And the craziest thing is, it wont change the amount of CO2 in the air, nor stop the climate from changing.

I didn't realise they weighed that much. I'm a bit concerned now that planet earth may fall out of it's orbit carrying that much more weight in EV batteries in years to come.
I guess the difference between fossil fuels and batteries is that batteries have to be disposed of when their life expires.
Batteries arent renewable, it is the use of the sun or maybe wind to charge them that is partially renewable.
Solar and wind only work when that resource is available. Night time and calm days come to mind. Panels and wind turbines have a limited life.
Batteries in any form are not renewable. From the first post their disposal should be questioned.
I would think that maybe the author has used a little poetic licence with regard to battery weights, but even if we halve that figure then the disposal of EV batteries will be a massive environmental problem into the future.
Holy snappin batflaps robin!! lets hope batteries are evenly distributed round the world lest we go a bit unbalanced...
The Three Gorges Dam raising the height of water stores 39 trillion kg of water. NASA calculated the dam only slows the rotation of Earth by 0.06 microseconds.

Well if that is the case we should never have to be concerned of the ever increasing height of disposed EV batteries.

A long range weighs 1840kgTesla 3 has a 480kg battery with a 500k range city driving, so a rural run maybe 200k.
How big a battery would a 125t Roadtrain require servicing Perth to Darwin route need, if the M3's battery is 38% of it weight by my rough calculation the 125t road train would need about a 47t battery therefore it's carrying capacity would be reduced to 62% that would mean the first of the 3 trailers would be for the battery, or do we distribute the battery load between the 3 trailers.
Oh how far would that roadtrain get oops, we have a problem Houston.
Bugger it we will stay with Diesal, because Hydrogen year away distributon and storage is going to take longer the EV chargers.
