ALL automakers are facing a chip shortage. Why focus on EVs?
The problem with the car industry is that it implements a "just in time" manufacturing philosophy. This means that components are ordered as needed rather than being kept in stock.

Gundog is just pushing climate denial.
Just in time supply is being used in other industries. I had to wait weeks for some pavers. They supplied the wrong number. Now I have to wait some more weeks as the just in time suppliers provide more pavers. One used to be able to one's trailer and pick the supplies up in the day.

Buzz,
I didnt see that Gundog was pushing anything to do with climate
The article from FREETHINK does not mention once, the phrase Climate Change.
You are writing something into the OP that wasnt there.
This is why we as a forum can not have a sensible debate on anything because if you havent turned the topic to Climate Change you have turned it to Politics.
There was one sentence in the entire article that mentioned Carbon Emissions and we all know that if we take out all the pollutant factors of building an electric car and its batteries and the solar and wind to charge the batteries THEN we have a saving on carbon emissions while the car is being driven.

Zeroing in on the climate change stuff. You just can't help yourself can you Ivan 01. Why don't you declare that undesirable trait in your signature?
Rob is having a little break from this forum while he is undergoing some medical procedures.
I-read your rudeness before it was deleted.
I note that you havent changed you modus operandi in as much as you turning things to suit your self and writing things into other posts that they really didnt say.
You said this.
Gundog is just pushing climate denial.
Did you not?
I have written to Cindy with regard to Robs condition and to mention your antics on here.
A good forum ruined by a lunatic who has no interest in travel or camping or the outside lifestyle.
This is just one example of how you are ruining this forum and from messages from other they can all see it.
Why dont you just pack up your podium and go onto a forum that more suits your agenda.

Angela,
I did make a mistake and whereas I should have said Gundog's disapproval of EVs. I'm sorry about that.
Regarding 'a good forum ruined...':
Somehow you appear to think that I have no interest in travel or camping. I wonder how to came to that conclusion?
Do you realise that I've tried to make peace but others keep pestering me? Who's the lunatic in that instance? Oh, and you are insulting me, expecting me to comply?
You feel that I should leave the forum because I don't put up with being bullied. I can understand that you wish to support your husband but if you had an objective look at the posts, you might possibly see that he and his friends are not so virtuous.

You make a great assumption about my dissapproval of EV's.
In fact I have made the effort to available myself as to the best information available of EV's in general pertaining to my circumstance for their suitability.
EV's are best suited for inner city users, because of the lack of ultra high speed chargers and the lack of compatitibility with charging plugs makes them an issue for them other than a daily driver.
Even the BMW E with its towing trial in the US proved unsuitable for Australia, even the Tesla comes up short in its 2.25t towing limit.
Its a folly of governments in Australia to suggest by 2030 the sale of ICE vehicles be banned.
Somehow you appear to think that I have no interest in travel or camping. I wonder how to came to that conclusion?.
You have been a member of this forum for exactly two years and have made almost 1100 posts - I cannot recall a single post from you about the core business of this forum.

I would be more concerned about electronic component shortages in the event that China attacks Taiwan. Half of the world's foundry output comes from there.
Taiwan semiconductor sector accounted for US$115 billion, which is ca. 20% of global semiconductor industry. In selected sectors like foundry operations, Taiwanese companies account for 50% of world market, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) being the biggest player in the foundry market.

And, no doubt, this is a significant part of the reason China covets Taiwan. I'm a little out of touch now but I do not believe China is able to manufacture ICs to anything like the wavelength Taiwan/USA can achieve and such ability is not easily achieved. I recall one wafer fab (I think Intel?) which was finally abandoned because they could not achieve a sufficiently high yield *and no one could discover why*. Yes, if China attacks Taiwan the whole world will change significantly.

I think we can expect to see a proliferation of fake ICs.
Back in the early 1990s there was a RAM shortage due to a fire at Sumitomo, Japan, which impacted the supply of epoxy resin for IC packages. Unscrupulous Taiwanese operators took advantage of the problem by flooding the market with fake ICs. I heard stories of people turning up with suitcases where the top layer of chips was genuine and the rest were just plastic dummies. I personally encountered numerous cases of fake cache SRAM chips on 486 motherboards. I would prise off the covers of these chips and underneath there was no silicon, just empty space. In fact I remember one motherboard where the designer didn't even bother with the pretence of wiring the dummy chip to the rest of the circuit board.

Any excuse to post negativity on new technology, that is why 'focus on EVs'. You are correct, it's all across the board - no pun intended.

"Current issues have been brought on in part by COVID-19 affecting global supply chains and a shortage of semiconductors, a vital component of modern vehicles."
An IC is an Integrated Circuit which is a semiconductor. A quick search with your preferred search engine would have told you that. Do try to keep up.

Auto manufacturing bean counters shot themselves in the goulies by grinding chip makers down to almost zero profit margins. When covid came along video game sales boomed, the chip makers make money on those sales so why rush to supply automakers now?
