This morning I wandered across to the toilet at this caravan park in Wentworth (NSW) and for no accountable reason a memory came into my brain of the time when I was around seven years of age and plucked up the courage to take a sneek peek into the ladies toilets at my local rec. (oval), I was perplexed by the lack of a urinal (How did they wee!?) but what I do remember is the notice affixed to the wall near the door which read:
"Ladies: please adjust your dress before leaving".
What a strange world where women needed to be told how to arrange their clothes - unlike today when, often, they hardly wear any.
I wonder what things you remember which are now long gone...?

When my son was a little boy I took him to the toilet at the Victoria Market one day.
We walked to the end of the block & it had a sign WOMEN, I walked to the opposite end & we went in.
I was looking for the urinal when a lady came in with a weird look on her face.
Yes, the block was split longitudinally.
We got out of there fast, I almost pulled his arm out of its socket.
I remember when all fizzypop etc came in glass returnable bottles ,and me and a few mates used to walk down the side of road verge ditches looking for them ,quick wash then too the shops for pocket money .
Then sneak around to the back of the shop, grab a few more and take them back again
Makes me feel better now. I used to do the same thing. Glad to know I wasn't the only one. All these years I've carried that guilt. All over 5 c a bottle. Mind you, 5 c got you a big bag of lollies. Bugger feeling bad, I'll take the bag.

Adelaide railway station had the equivalent sign at the exit to the meens toilet. Probably taken down about the same time as the" NO SPITTING" signs along the platform

My brother did that, with the money he would buy a shillings worth of chocolate bullets at 10 for a penny. Counting out 120 bullets used to drive the shop owner crazy.

A long time ago (about 60 years) when I was a kid we did that, my dad used to drop us off at the south end of Kiama in his FB Holden wagon and we walked through the grass outside the safety barrier along Saddleback mountain on the Princes Hwy all the way to the top above Werri Beach, collecting bottles in a wheat bag, then we cashed in the bottles and went to the Fish and chip shop at Werri for our Sunday fish and chips.
Years later a friend had 3 sons who used to collect aluminium cans, you could sell them for scrap by weight, they used to get a heap of cans and insert a small bit of blue metal in each can before crushing so it did not rattle then sell them for pocket money. They all grew up to be fine upstanding members of society.
