Nugget

We're currently bush camping in Victoria's Golden Triangle.

Wer'e completely alone except for a fossicker camped about half a kilometre away.

Yesterday he called in to say hello & show us this little beauty.

Its worth around $4,500.

I have often wondered about doing this.Surely everwhere in that area belongs to some mining companies claim. How would you know and how do you get on if its on an existing claim? Any experts here know?

It was found in State Forest.

Not too sure but I think State Forest is Crown Land?

He'd found about a dozen of them, most of them smaller, around $25,000 worth in total.

The Gummit owns all the minerals in the land - peasants can pay for a mining lease/ fossicker licence, that will allow finders keeper to come into force.

If I found nuggets - I would keep stum and get a licence on another piece of dirt and then claim that's where I got lucky.

The law regarding prospecting varies significantly from state to state so *check*.

In Victoria you may purchase a "Miner's Right" from the state government (pretty cheap nowadays) which entitles you to ownership of gold (maybe other minerals too?) you find when prospecting by hand.

You may prospect on private land with permission, in all State Forests, in areas of National Parks designated for prospecting and on non allocated Crown Land. You may *only* use hand tools and you must not unduly disturb flora - so no mechanical diggers or felling trees, you must backfill holes you dig.

NB. Do not buy a detector without doing lots of research first - they are very much a "horses for courses" affair.

Edit: typo.
