Do your head, tail & brake lights work

I have had to do a regular evening commute due to family health issues.

I find it staggering the number of vehicles each evening with lights not working. In a previous working life I had an evening commute. Very rarely saw this issue in the past.

On average each evening about 1 vehicle with one headlight not working. About 4 vehicles with a brake (1, 2 or occasionally 3) or rear light (usually 1) not working, or some strange sequence of illumination when applying the brakes, sometimes with the reverse light being illuminated.

About once every second week if the opportunity presents itself at intersection lights, I indicate to the driver that their brake lights, I tell them exactly what is not working. Sometimes with the answer, 'really'... Yes, XYZ lights are not working!

It is easy to see if brake lights are working in reflections waiting in traffic & see if there are 2 functioning headlights reflecting off the rear of the vehicle in front.

I take it most people have lost all ability & or care to whether their car is illuminated correctly.

Then there is the issue of LED globes in headlights which were never designed for LED globes blinding on coming traffic. A whole topic for itself!

When we're at home we walk our dog in a variety of different  directions for an hour every morning, mostly in the dark.
We see at least four vehicles every morning with only one headlight.

Maybe because these days it's so damn difficult to get to a headlight bulb to change the damn thing. Engine bays are so crammed. For example, we have a Suzuki Kizashi. Couldn't for the life of me see how to change a headlight globe, until I saw how to on utube. You have to take the front panel off, and the lights out! First time took me 2.5 hours. Done twice since, and down to about 45 minutes. Even a BA Falcon needs finger contortion and skinned knuckles (for the left hand side).

Difficulty to get there is no excuse. Bulb blown technically makes the vehicle unroadworthy.
As a young man on 'P' plates, there were a few instances when Mr Plod took an unjustified
dislike to your car and a need to boost his ego and proceeded to break your taillight in order
to make the car unroadworthy and issue a 'canary' on the spot. Yes this would not pass the
test these days.
Some cars have a warning light on the dashboard to inform you.
There was a time when an inspection had to be done prior to registration renewal. Yes it
was a flawed system invented by an overpaid bureaucrat needing to justify their employment.
The really sad thing with all this is the fact that Mr Plod would more then likely see this whilst
and patrolling and does nothing about it. The reason why is many fold. No money involved is
one that comes to mind. No chase is another one. No ego boost is probably the most common.
Off topic but I have reported many times on PoliceLink the fact that there is a person in a nearby
house selling drugs.
The mere traffic of regular cars is a dead giveaway. Most prevalent on a Thursday afternoon.
Nothing is done. I have never seen any shape or form of police going to that house.
Now this maybe no big deal in itself as he's probably a small fish, however the fact of the matter
is these are people driving under the influence and some of those are tradies who probably wor
under the influence, maybe at your house.

See lots of brake lights, or not see them. A lot of failures seem to be in cars 5-10years old.

N S W has an annual roadworthy for cars and some trailers over 5 years old.
