My view on this whole issue is: When your at an age demonstrating maturity AND paying tax, there is some chance I will listen because to me that gives one the right to attempt to influence others. Nothing or no one will ever change my view on that.

So people such as Malala Yousafzai, Barbara Johns, Louis Braille and Joan of Arc just to name a few, would have been totally dismissed by you.

Is that what you are saying Aussie?

Have a look at what they did in their early to mid teens.

I just wish they would deal with climate change in some other way other than to shut down fossil fuel usage. A good cleanup of land, sea and rivers to my mind would be a good start.

I agree, a good cleanup of our land, sea and rivers is a good thing but unfortunately this will have no effect in regards to climte change, fossil fuels are the big problem and we have to change our ways.

We must start now, for the sake of our children/grand children. They are the future!

Cheers

That's the second time you have accused me of posting under a pseudonym Mike and frankly I don't care for your stupid comments.

I don't need subterfuge or trickery to state what I wish to say. It seems when you are getting your ears boxed or shown up for the toxic individual you are your only resort is to divert the conversation.

I am sure Cindy can confirm or otherwise whether that poster is me. Would you like a little wager? I have a HWS replacement coming up that will cost about $1200. How about if it is me then I pay my bill plus give you the same amount and if it is not me, you pay my HWS bill.

How big is your mouth now pal?

Unfortunately there can be little scare mongering or money to be made out of a clean up campaign.

I know that this has been suggested before but we could all consider planting a tree or two.

Here's a third time.

All Cindy can do is look at IP addresses and I can change my IP address every few seconds.

Dmaxer: I just don't care, I am over you. Post away, I'll not respond to you again, Goodbye and I hope life treats you well.

The reason we live longer today than we did 150 years ago is due to advances in medicine and health care. I would have thought that was obvious, except if you're an antivaxxer.

Whilst there appears to be a superficial 'truth' the comparison of the two pictures & the accompanying commentary inevitably comes from folk who continue to argue for the use of fossil fuels, thereby undermining any argument they seek to make with the meme & shooting themselves in the foot.

The meme purports to highlight the contrast between the two women, but largely fails on account of the reader knowing full well that there is no care for the woman on the right & only criticism of the one on the left.

Not exactly intelligent.

That superficial truth (superficial primarily because it has such minimal context) of the meme ignores that the criticism is being made of a young girl who I'm sure lives a far more ecologically sustainable life than those who made or support the the Meme.

Like most memes, it seeks a "Yeah Right" response with little expectation of further thought.

If we continue to use fossil fuels we will end up with a far worse situation for everyone than the meme infers the lady on the right is in.

The other 'yellow' meme posted a short time ago (for the second time recently) says far more about the person who made it or decided to share it. I expect it must come from some anti authority, anti vax conspiracy theory loving site.

Why old men are triggered by Greta Thunberg

By Liam Dam

When I saw the clip of 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg speaking at the UN I bristled.

A critical voice in my head spoke up.

"Why is she so overly dramatic?" the voice said.

"I bet it's not going to be as bad as she said. I bet it takes longer for things to get really bad, things always do."

The voice in my head got louder.

"Why is she so dismissive of everything that works well in society?"

"She says we should stop thinking about money - doesn't she know that we're going to need money and capitalism to fix this crisis."

"Doesn't she see that technology is the only way through this?"

Now the voice was shouting.

"I don't see Venezuela doing much to solve climate change," the voice said.

"Young people are annoying," it said.

It was the voice of an angry old white man.

The angry old man lives inside me. He's reactionary and defensive.

He doesn't like change and I hear him getting louder as the years roll by.

He's technically right about a lot of things, but he's almost always on the wrong side of history.

I don't like him much.

Critical thinking is crucial to human success. We need to apply it rigorously.

But if we keep our focus narrow enough it can become a useful tool to avoid seeing a much bigger picture.

Keeping our focus narrow makes conservatism easier. It allows us to push back against change.

For some reason we get better and better at that as we age.

You'd think with so much less time left on the planet we'd be getting more care free.

We've done the hard yards, we're financially secure. The stakes should be getting lower.

Instead we focus on all we have invested in the world. We want to hold on to it.

Conservatism can be synonymous with wisdom. It can stop us making mistakes and sometimes it is good to share.

But it should be shared without anger.

And when the evidence is clearly in favour of the need for change - as it is with climate change - it can become a problem.

Thunberg's passion for change seems deeply triggering for many older men.

It has prompted an aggressive backlash on social media and from some conservative commentators.

That depth of feeling about Thunberg isn't surprising to me - but it is a little embarrassing.

I recognise the appeal of conservatism. It is like a warm blanket. It provides an almost religious comfort for those who enjoy the status quo.

Its arguments encourage us to relax, stop worrying, shed any burden of guilt.

I am middle-aged and privileged enough to be lazy about social change.

But on balance I'm glad that young people are getting politically fired up.

So if you are a male of certain age, if you feel angry and antagonised by what young people are doing and saying, maybe it's time to stop and take a moment to think about what it is that specifically upsets you

I'm not a fan of memes on the whole. Too often they are a lazy way of trying to make a point, but more often they are little more than humour directed to the converted. Occasionally they can be very clever.

This little one is neither. It simply make a single point without putting anyone down . It's a point which all too often is lost when discussion son the forum (or elsewhere) arise & instead of responsible adult thinking any discussion gets mired in distractive dross & finger pointing.  Therefore this little meme is just to bring us away from the sideshows & back to the main game even if just for a moment.

He's the chap who wrote what I posted. The link to the article was included. Other than that I have no better idea of who he is than you, but it's polite to attribute someone's work whenever possible, so I included that attribution.

Perhaps it's good we don't know who he is, & can just focus on the what he's written.

What a gullible person you are,You quote a so called ex-spurt from Farce Book to try and get your point across.

Talk about a sycophant, you have lost all credibility, I am an elderly person I have nothing against Greta except she is being used.So don't try an say elderly people are against her. Stop twisting things for your own advantage, you are a deceptive person.

What on earth are you talking about PT?

Who mentioned anything about someone being an expert,  & if you found any reference to facebook you certainly weren't reading what I posted. no

I quoted some words I believe are worth reading about how some see Greta Thunberg in a thread about how people see Greta Thunberg ..... that's all.

You don't have to agree with what the author wrote, you don't even have to like it!

But it really is totally beyond me how you can find the post which quotes an attributed author, & gives a link to the original article in the New Zealand Herald deceptive in any way, or indeed intended to somehow advantage me personally!  Really just how would that work if it were so????  I can't figure that one out at all!  If it caused one grumpy old man to reconsider their position as per the last line then the only advantage would be to us all.

And what exactly is it about posting someone else's words which you presumably don't like which gives you cause to call me gullible??? Does gullibility equate to not sharing the same belief as you or is it just a name to call me? If you have a rational basis on which to call me gullible, please enlighten me.
