I wonder why they have sails up?  Perhaps there is access either behind them or through the little bit of water at the front

A good film to see is Admiral Richard Bryd Secret Naval Expedition 1946 -Operation Highjump.

You will see green forests and freshwater lakes. It is still on Youtube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9chz8COYVc&t=3153s

I was puzzled by that as well. There is quite a bit of sail up. The wind appears to be filling the sails from the front (over the port bow). ... i.e. blowing it backwards and sideways. That matches the pattern of calm area and ripples on the water.

To make ripples like that in a relatively short space the wind must be at least 10-15 knots. So, potential damage to the rudder as it bumps into the ice. Yet nobody appears to be working the sails. Puzzling.

Maybe the ropes are frozen. Those old hemp ropes held a lot of moisture. But then again, I may be just plssing in the wind.

Just in case nobody has worked it out yet, if you r-click the photos and open them in a new tab, you will see the full-sized images.

I have tried about 20 search options in N A A, all fail so far, it is a most unfriendly place for mere mortals.

And what would that line be going strait out horizontally to the right of the ship.

Agree. I had some success.

Go to https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SessionTimeout.aspx

Click "guest" (To start an active session, you can search as a guest)

Type "British Antarctic Expedition" in the Keywords box.

Select 1910 - 1913 as your date range and then Search.

You'll then see a bunch of search results. Some will be documents (stack of papers icon), others will be photos (camera icon).

Here is one example:

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=25040371 (photo + information)

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/NAAMedia/ShowImage.aspx?B=25040371&S=1&T=P&R=0 (photo)

BTW, searching for "Antartic" (sic) yields no results.

An easier method is to select the Photo Search tab, type "British Antarctic" into the Keywords box, 1910 to 1913 in the data range boxes, and then Search.

The search results appears as photo thumbnails.

How do they get to shore or back on board if the boat sits in the middle of the water. Need the wind to keep it on the edge.
