The Caravan Park we live at in the Whitsundays has been booked out for the last week, This morning we headed south with out the van, on the way to Brisbane for another medical appointment.
Between Proserpine and Mackay the was about 30-40 vans heading North, from there to Sarina about half a dozen more seen, after Sarina the onslaught of vans and motorhomes were on the move mostly north, we stopped counting at Camilla by the time came upon a serious motor accident just south of the big rest area between St Lawerance and Marlbrough a rough estimate of over 200 travellers.
There was very long lines of traffic in both directions crawling at a snails pace, to clear the accident zone it took us about 40 minutes to get past the accident. The drive into Rocky was slower than usual because the number of vans southbound were creating rolling road blocks that coupled with lots of traffic heading north, every 3rd or 4th vehicle as a caravans, motorhomes or camper trailers, the lack of overtaking lanes made it difficult to get around them, if you did it wasnt long till you dropped on the tail of another conga line.
Going past many of the free camp areas like The Leap and any caravan parks you could see from the road were chockers.
On our trips south we always stop at a motel just South of Bororen at Koorawatha Homesteda Motel.
We have been on the road for a couple of months we left Lake Macquarie and quickly made our way via Moree, St George, Mt Isa and Kathryne before slowing down. There were plenty of people heading north in the Territory but nothing like the traffic over here on the west coast. From Broome south its been just a constant procession of people heading north and to make it worse we have now hit WA school holidays. We are currently sitting in Jurian Bay in the pouring rain and we plan on camping here for awhile before heading further south. We are definately travelling against the grain but even so we still have to compete for space wirh those who are following the sun. The only problem with heading in an anti clockwise direction is that we always seem to be heading into a head wind especially here on the west coast.
