Disconnecting from new technology

Ok, maybe my fault for not keeping up with new technology... but really!

I once ran a Render Farm at home for 3d work, major issues getting it to work, but always got there in the end

Bought a new Mac, got a far more expensive Studio model as Mac's have been designed as a throwaway product (landfill). One has to think 15 years ahead to minimise landfill, with CPU, ram & hard drive etc all permanently soldered in. No internal upgrades possible... simply landfill product.

Can't connect my old Fuji Xerox $6000 printer.

It forced me to manually draw up a spreadsheet with paper & pencil (at least I am good at drafting) then walk 15 km to my accountant as this still works. (I found a walking frame chucked out for Council clear-ups because the brakes didn't work. I fixed with 2 spanners).

At least I have the ability to still walk... just... & paper & pencil actually still works! I will take survival provisions as in this instance it still functions over 60,000+ years!

2023 technology really doesn't function.

I don't know how the teenagers of today will cope. ALWAYS if I buy 2 spring rolls or similar lunch. Out comes the mobile phone of the sales person to add $1.50 + $1.50 = $3.00 (personally I would have thought this is not calculus... but I must be from a different era... graveyard material!)

Recently I got a Bunnings sales person into a nervous breakdown, I was worried about being sued due to stress... their extreme stress, as I gave them a 10c coin to avoid a more complex change situation.

Sorry for the rant.

Agree, and don't dare ask for half a dozen of anything.

'Half a dozen' terminology is an infinitely less demanding task than flexing 3 grey matter cells of working out the trivial thought provoking concept & physically exertion of mastering a rotary dial phone!

I have come to the conclusion than one needs a PhD to use a condom or tampons (person hygiene hardware), or have I got that wrong as well... maybe software, depending on the product!

$4.50 of small chips, change from a $5.00 note plus 50 cents = $1.00 (to dispose of Australia's worst design coin!)

Hardy a double Masters!

I finally got the printer operating vie ethernet still on the old Mac. Not ideal as this computer is from 2009. But at least something.

Also set up remote screen on the new computer so I could do it from there. Again not ideal.

The time wasted when one is not familiar with all these things.

Current crop of shool age kids are imersed in thelatest tech.   Old Farts dont really have a choice to disconnect.    If around retirement age, the move towards a cashless sociiety and the New Payments Program (NPP) is gunna F you up if not proficient on the web.   Today's generation not being able to use a rotary dial phone or tune an AM radio is not a problem requiring depletion of cognitive resources because they are very unlikely to ever need to do the task.   Current crop of engineers do not need to know how to operate a slide rule for another example.    My personal solution and Future Proofing is to buy the latest Tech for the GGKids and make ure I can contact them on Messenger when I need the latest App installed  or to change my subscriptions to news and streaming services.

 Plug & play.

Try hunting down network problems on a 3d render farm when one has misplaced a fullstop.

Or where to drill a hole in a Fuji Xerox printer to recycle the waste container cartridge for used toner & save a $100

I reckon most young things chuck printers when plug & play spits the dummy!

Depending on your printer needs, I purchased a HP printer/flatbed scanner, brand new for $27, It's main purpose is to scan receipts for me to submit for travel claims, other than that a print job every now and then. when the printer cartridges run out, replacement cartridges cost more than the printer, oh HP have got smart they are you cannot refill them.

About your printer is it connected to the old Mac with a printer cable and are you using the old Mac as Print Server on your home network ?

What ports does the printer have ?

What model Fuji Xerox printer is it.

It's A Fuji Xerox C2255 with 1.25gb (1.5 max) memory, additional tray & duplexer. About 75kg all up. It can only be connected via ethernet.

It's a laser postscript printer, cartridges 12,000 pages. Up to A3+ (329 x 483), can actually do 1200mm length. Up to 250gsm paper.

The current ethernet network is via the old Mac. Also my old PCs are via the Mac. But only use one of them these days, very occasionally, an old dual X3480 Xeon, 12gb ram (a fair back in 2012) running XP.

All boat anchor equipment now!

I just have to keep working at it.

Could you make a print server out of an old Linux box?

I just had a look at the setup instructions for the C2255 it show the option to use a usb 2.0 cable to direct connection in Mac Os 10.

I have a Canon LBP-1120 laser printer which I've hardly ever used. It requires Canon's proprietary CAPT driver. However, there is no support in Win 10/11. Only Linux has something for it.

Have a look at Driverguide.com they list drivers for Win 10/11

All I could find was "outbyte-driver-updater.exe" which is flagged by MalwareBytes as a "potentially unwanted program". The other drivers are for Linux or Win 7 and earlier.

"PUP.Optional.Outbyte is Malwarebytes' detection name for a family of potentially unwanted programs aimed at Windows machines. These programs ask money for services that are of no value or already included in Windows, for example defragmentation, driver updates, and registry cleaners."

Thanks for looking, anyway.

Do you have an old PC where the driver is compatible? Very cheap to buy. You could set it up as a print server sharing the printers on your home network. You would need to "Render print joobs on the shared PC". That means your client PC does not need a driver for it.

I have never tried it, but it should work fine.

Depending on the software you use, you could just copy a file from your current PC (Mac) and then activate the printing on the old one.

When I first got the printer I had issues. I got Fuji Xerox to try to solve the problem. They took over my computer remotely (frighteningly how easy it is, especially if you don't trust that party), they never resolved it. They weren't accustomed to people using an enterprise printer on a Mac.

USB I could never get to work properly. Ethernet either on Mac or PC was ok, but better on PC, but all my PCs were for 3d rendering (no anti virus software, but never connected to the internet, still today no issues) most of the PCs I removed the video cards to reduce energy consumption as the PCs were only needed to be operated remotely (4 or so metres away vie ethernet).

Adobe InDesign would take over the printer. You have far more adjustment options than simply printing a document or image from run of the mill software, & could see a better quality print.

I will try USB again, but it really didn't work other than basic generic printer settings. Another problem is where to put a 75kg printer as I will need a longer USB cable, which has more issues than ethernet.

I can see why today's generation technical abilities extend to plug & play!

A non related issue, on the old Mac, to send a file via USB to the android phone. Just click on the USB symbol & send a file from there.

Now it is a separate program.

Really!

I did buy a new computer, didn't actually need one yet at such. But bought a new Mac, but because everything is soldered on bought a Mac Studio. Trying to think a decade ahead. Also their unified memory has issues with SSD, so the more ram you have the better for the long run to save the SSD. My old Mac mini I replaced the hard drive & upped the ram from my PC shop.

Again, another issue, I have a Sony phone, they are not supported in Australia. After hours of discussion with Sony, I bought a Mac so to run their repair software to hopefully reset the phone. Their software doesn't work on new Mac, $3.5k later!

I did buy a $128 Nokia to tide me over, which works perfectly, but I like the Sony phone.

I get the impression we are all being pushed into ever smaller boxes. Quite happy with the last box. But not in the meantime!

Getting back to the OP's rant, on a recent trip I came across more than one cafe that asked if I wanted a receipt. As I try to keep track of expenses, the answer is always yes. At one cafe I was then asked for my phone number or email address so that I could be sent a receipt! I refused to divulge that information and requested a printed receipt. The response was "we don't do that". To which I insisted that the salesperson hand-write on a piece of paper the details for my records. She did that, and very neatly detailed too! I'll bet that that was the first time a grumpy old GN had asked and got such a service from that cafe.

I believe they don't have to give you a receipt then & thare, but they do have to give it to you within 30 days, otherwise you are actually required to report it to the ATO as they will claim 48 point something % tax then that is the claimed back.

Or it might be than you have to give the 48% to the ATO & they claim it back.

Easier to write a hand written recipe on serviette, or toilet paper for that matter!
