Vast difference between the number that enlisted and the number that retired. 50 years ago today I was sitting next to a guy I went to school with, he was not long back from Vietnam, I still scrub my hair more than I really need to, trying to get his blood and brains out when his shotgun took his head off.
If I had less drinks I may have seen what he was about to do and possibly stopped him but I was not going to be there every night....
The other version of the OP saying is that there are two kinds of people in the world:
Those that are sick & those that are not there yet!
Looking at family history... cancer, dialysis & a few other issues... it's not looking good even though we have all had good health life styles. What else can one do?
Looking at numbers, ok we are living 30 plus years longer than 1900, but in the last decade or so the actual real quality of life is only 6 months. The remainder of life is torture in an institution. I saw this with Grandparents & one Parent. The other Perent died a quality end at home in a caring situation with hospital bed, pneumatic mattress to prevent bedsores (not a single bedsore) & oxygen concentrator to name a few.
At $7,000 a week (early 2000s) it was worth every cent for me & my Sister's long term peace of mind & loss of inheritance!
My solution is to go out in style. A quadruple (to the point more for remoteness) battery power bike, well sealed tent & Honda generator for my personal exit plan (probably not such a green environment!)

Why do you think I bought a motorbike again at such an older age of 64 recently, I am gunna go out in style, No I am not going to neck myself, I just want to relive my youth again.
