'I would rather stick a fork in my eye'

Quote: Phillip Adams.

As a kid my parents forced me to play sport for many years. A few times a week training in the cold & rain, then matches on the weekend, often also covered in mud, numerous injuries & the occasional concussion.

Misery at every level & extreme OH&S issues. Never again will I kick a round bladder.

Far more enlightening things in life than mud, cold, rain, short & long term injuries.

& these days gambling on sport includes kids matches.

I suppose cigarettes is some minor start from disassociation from sport. Still have to remove gambling, alcohol, concussion & other life long injuries.

I found it interesting when I was watching State of Origin games 2 & 3  in WA  when certain adds came on  they would be blanked out and a notice would come on the screen saying that the current advertising was not permitted.. I am assuming it was for sports betting as I dont know what other sort of ads would be banned in WA that arent banned in NSW and Qld. If it is sports betting I reckon its brilliant I dont know one person that doesnt hate it and would love to see gambling promotions gone from live sports telecasts - unfortunately too much money is being made by TV networks from advertising. The government makes them put up some BS after each add basically saying that gambing is a tax on the stupid but they are doing nothing to actually stop it.

Do cigarettes, gambling, alcohol & highly saturated food ads add value to society?

I see the school children at extensive queues at Chatswood & Crows Nest then stuffing themselves with KFC & Macdonalds, & vaping while waiting.

Our next generation of health issues.

Quiet subtle erasure of such products will reduce societal & individual costs & increase quality of life for all parties.

Why do busy bodies stick their nose in other peoples choices.

I remember when schools dropped lollies, pies, pasties ect from their tuck shops for healthy choices celery and carrot sticks, salad rolls with no meat or butter. we owned a Deli not far from the school, come lunch time kids would come down to get pie, sausage roll, hit chips and a can of drink, out of the blue I had a representation from the schools P&C telling me that they will be banning kids comming to the shop for lunch and that I was to refuse to serve the kid if they came in.

Well they left the shop with their tails between their legs, when I suggested that if you implemented such a rule, I would sue the bloody lot of them, one smart arse said that they would enforce a rule the no children could leave the school ground at lunch time, I asked how could you prevent my son  and others who live close by from leaving the grounds to come home for lunch, the reply was he will need a pass to leave, my response was my approval overides your stupid pass. That was the end of that kids still kept comming down at lunch time.

It's called freedom of choice, too much nanny state BS going on today.

Right on the money there again Gundog. Time would be better spent by the P & C tossers getting teachers to concentrate on the 3 R's. To much of their time teaching the little "darlings" their rights etc. Including the "lefty" views.

Other half is a retired teacher & all her time including weekends was spent get kids the best possible education. Routinely doing 60 hours a week.

Additionally the government should have been paying me a partial salary for the admin I was helping out with.

Should have added, I really don't know how she fitted it all in, but she was teaching at university as well in the evenings. She also has an MA, so a bit more educated than some here. & Adding far more value to society.

Give me a break student contact hours is < 6 hours a day < 40 weeks a year, minus public holidays, student free day, teacher development days.

A primary school teacher teaches a core subjests like the 3R's and which over the years has been buggered up with life experiance subjects. High school teachers generally specialize in a couple of subjects, the subject matter changes very little over the years, unless some clown public servent invents a different way to teach maths (the rods come to mind)

Don't get me wrong there some bloody great teaches out there, but there are an even greater amount who are just turning up and doing enough without effort.

I will give you a couple of examples a neighbour of mine was a Tech School teacher taught the same trade subject for 20 years his lesson plans never changed, teacher number 2 was home room teacher for my middle son, after 2 term we went to a parent teacher night, this rattled on about Fabian was do so well in this and that, like he's doing good in maths but needs to work harder, anyway at the end of her speil, I thanked her for telling us what she thought we wanted to hear, and then asked her if hes doing good in maths why does the math tutor we have been paying to help him with is maths told us, he struggles complex math like fractions etc, I then asked to tell us the truth on how he is actually doing, that didnt go well.

Oh buy the way Fabian is doing exactly what he wanted to be a Truck Driver and a Vol firefighter, a uni degree adding far more value to society, there are plenty with a degree on the dole.

Good one Gundog, a tick to you.

I have teachers in my family and they chose that career.

When I hear them bitch and moan about the extended hours they are required to put in I just remind them about the three months holidays that they enjoy annually.

They then tend to quiet down.

In other words over 3 decades of rubbish.

While on the subject of work my toughest stint was 60 hour regularly then 80 hours a week, another 80 hours then 132 hours a week.

Wifey's hours over the year was tougher.

Beat that.

One year she hadn't been paid by the Dept of education for 5 months because of a complete stuff up.

Finally sorted out.

Probably still go the records somewhere.

Just in case my sock pipe isn't big enough to fix problem.

My most torturous hours were on this job, one of a number of architectural models for the Olympics.

I even suggested Mirvac could come around at 4am Sunday morning so we could fix their drawings. In the meantime the drawings looked like a blood bath with red ink corrections everywhere, an effective skill learnt from teacher (other half), I did use a thick texta to clearly highlight about a 1000 mistakes. Mirvac then did reissue fairly good drawings after converting my red ink to black.

Over the decades I have seen sizable portions of building rebuilt due to really ridiculous & pointless stuff-ups which I have informed architects about, but where the information never actually got within their companies to avoid rebuilding.

A little bit of interesting information on the overall Olympic plan which I am sure most people do not have a clue about. I questioned various gaps between buildings on the master plan for the model, to me didn't make sense.

I was informed in a round about way that no one else picked up on this issue. The gaps were to drive tanks through if there was an extreme terrorist situation at the Olympics. That was an eye opener!

The most funny situation was when delivering the model to Homebush. It was pissing down with rain at the time, there were 4 buckets in the display centre collecting leaks from the roof. The 3 receptionists were frantically taking calls from the third of the village that pretty much also had leaking roofs as well. Don't ever build a complex roof!

Took about 3 months to recover from the life threatening hours involved. Left office at midnight & was back in office by 6am. Never again. I sure some of you would be happy if I died.

Another Mirvac job. Built a model, ready to deliver.

They complained that it was wrong.

Didn't want to get into an extensive argument as wanted them as a long term customer.

So said we will sort it out later.

Anyway, rebuilt a major portion of the model ready to deliver.

Didn't hear anything for 2 days.

Got call, can you re-re-build the model to how it was built.

Ok, earned a lot of money, but really the models are not quite the same. Would rather they were not built 3 times.

Maybe don't need any more socks to silence people, but just in case they are not effective enough.

Another job, well actually many jobs. Building half a dozen models for the same site over 20 years.

I'm not complaining as such, it's just more income & being familiar makes it easier to build the next & next models.

But really, just to keep building models for the same site over decades is ultimately a waste of money which just gets pushed onto the end user.

I suppose it all allowed me to retire at 45 so you can have your socks!
