Tom Robinson - Solo Rower

Maybe I've missed something but this clown is on a personal quest to beat a world record.

He has built his own craft, funds come from a Go-Fund me page and had to be rescued.

Now, I am not a genius nor a boat builder, but basic common sense tells me that if one was

to venture on such expedition the least that could/should've been done in the design is to

ensure the vessel has the ability to right itself. Old mate Tom became a cropper when an

'unexpected' wave turned his boat upside down and a cruise ship made a detour to rescue him.

Will he be making a financial contribution toward the rescue? Probably not.

I have issue with people undertaking this sorts of adventures if it's not to raise funds or for charity.

In summary:

1) Boat design is flawed

2) Go-Fund me page to fund HIS ego

3) Rescued at no reported costs to him

Reminds me of Tony Bullimore and the $6m bill.

X2  Spot on.

Also sick and tired of the number of folks travelling overseas without travel insurance, having problems, both health wise and accidents and then expect people to contribute via ^go fund me" .

Come in suckers confuse

Only a few months ago 22yo Xavier Dooer of the Gold Coast left on his meagre 22ft yacht to be the youngest and fastest to circumnavigate Australia UNASSISTED. Middle of winter!!

North of Fremantle he was towed ashore, repairs made so his record attempt was dashed.

He then set sail again and turning the coast at Augusta to Esperance had opportunities to seek shelter from winter storms approaching.  Nope, he was intent on satisfying his ego. 400km from Port Lincoln he supposedly struck a Sunfish... mmm... then supposedly got injured which with 6-8 metre swells was highly likely without wearing head protection.

. A damaged vessel he set off his rescue beacon. Two cargo ships diverted ($$), then an RAAF surveillance plane, then Rescue Helicopter risking high winds and lives to lift him off the cargo ship. Then good Samaritan fisherman from Port Lincoln retrieving his yacht. His mother arrived at Adelaide hospital to state how proud she was but wants him to return to the seas as soon as possible. No mention of rescue costs.

Then guy at Fremantle yacht club a guy starts up a Gofundme not to cover tax payers costs but to fund Doerr's future sailing adventures. Xavier has stated on Gold Coast radio that insurance will pay for his yachts damage and he intends to pay back rescue costs. It will never happen. Too self absorbed to think that rescue costs are funded by the tax payers. To him, it's a service thats free. Yet students the same age throughout this country amass debts from heir education and are pursued to repay them. The ATO will hunt you down to collect their tax and rightfully so. We are all accountable except ego chasers.

Xavier Doerr- the Australian version of Tony Bullimore and he wont be the last.

I believe in striving for innovation and pushing the boundaries of human capabilities, but in this case I don't see the potential benefit.

Back in the late '60s the first around the world sailing race brought much innovation in yacht design. In numerous aspects of life it those challenges that drive technological improvement. However, by achieving it as the youngest person does nothing to drive technological change. And if it succeeds, then someone younger will have to try.

Thumbs down from me.

x2.  Perhaps there should be a refundable "Richard Cranium" levy on clowns like this before they leave port to cover the costs of their rescue. Go Fund Me will probably get him going again, and he may well sell his story to the press? Sad state of affairs. Cheers
