How hot is it really?

The BOM website is currently showing temps here at home as

Temp 31.7C

App temp 26.5

Now, I understand they adjust the Temp for varying reasons etc.

But a variance of  5.2 deg is quite a bit.

Makes a bit of difference to life decisions.

Do they increase/decrease Temp or App Temp?

Is the Temp recording used to record our max temp?  Climate Change Mechanism perhaps?

I always used to say its hot enough to go for a swim when the temp reaches 30C. Down south in the dry areas that has little or no humidity.  Which one should I use as my guide?

or should I just suck it and see.

Get your own atomic clock with temperature gauge - we have one mounted in the caravan that is our standard - we also have our old mercury thermometer showing Celsius and Farenheight mounted just inside the door.
Temperature within any house property can vary 3/5 degrees.

ours says 31.1, but feels like 25.6. It almost always " feels less than actual somehow ". There is an explanation somewhere out there.

But it felt like 30 to me about 20 min ago. ( now 4.59)

It is possible to get an explanation on the BOM site that explains observations, but the crux of Apparent Temperature is it approximates the heat sensation, as affected by wind only in Australia, while walking in a shaded area. Thus, if the wind is a cool, stronger breeze, the affect on ambient temperature, which is taken in a sheltered weather station, will be greater than on a still day, or a day with a hot northerly blowing.

Hope that helps a bit.

Link to BOM page attached.

Ian, yes I am aware of all that.

However, I still have the choice of two temperatures, with a variance of 5C. This means a difference between, uncomfortably warm and pleasant.

Also, which figure is recorded as the maximum temperature. I would suggest that it is the higher temperature and thus could support the global warming hypothesis.

PS. I did go out to the pool, but didn't last long, as it was too cold.
So, temp to me was the app temp of 26.5. Pleasant but too cold to swim. As a further note, 26.5 is more like the temperatures here before Christmas and it will warm up a bit more later in the New Year.

I would use the Apparent Temperature as your guide, as that is the bureaus estimation of how you will feel in the real outside at that time.

The temperature that is quoted as the maximum for the day will always be the one shown just as the Tenperature.

Windspeed and humidity levels effect Wet Bulb temperature.    Maybe the Apparant Temperature figure is derived from windspeed and humidity reading adjacent to the location of the weather station?

Hi ,don`t forget that you need to take in consideration how cold and heat affects you personally .My wife is generally hotter than me and so any given temp will often feel differant to her than me .Myself on the other hand at 71 having `thinner` blood , feel the cold a lot more . The only rule i live by is ,i`ll take heat above ground over cool underground anyday .winkwink

We have done a fair bit of caving & are familiar with being underground, but do like popping our heads up to look around.

Agreed. I also fall back on the tried and tested beer gauge, three ice cold cans tells me it's been in the 30's all day. More than half a dozen and it's in the 40's.
