I am the father of three daughters, and I think I can understand if someone's order may be been handed over with a "big golly" topping.
If I had been in the shop and one of my daughter's was on the receiving end of the old smart#[se's comment, he would have received at the least, a trirade of fatherly cussing. His ears would have been bleeding. Not funny mate!!

I have three daughters as well. My perspective is that this teenager was cocooned too much in her upbringing. It's a tough world and I believe it is a parenting responsibility to prepare the children to handle such minor issues on their own.

If I was in the shop and observed such a situation I would be thinking I need to have a chat with her later. If she was severely embarassed (which I doubt would happen), then maybe a few words to the fellow. This would not be the only time she would need to handle such comments. So my focus would be to help her develop an appropriate retort and move past it. Perhaps something like ....

"I thought such puerile attempts at humour belonged in the schoolyard. Come back when you are mature enough to apologise. Next (next customer)." That turns the tables on the immature behaviour and makes him the brunt of the humour instead of her.

Protect your kids when they need it. Encourage them to stand on their own when protection is not needed. I did exactly that a few years at a pub, having a drink with my 30+ year old at the time. A crusty old fellow twice her age tried chatting her up. I was there to intervene if needed but she handled it with ease. She asked my why I had not intervened and I told her I would have if he had not got the message, but she needed to stand on her own feet because next time she may be alone. Had she been younger, maybe more of a helping hand would have been needed, but I doubt it.

It never fails to surprise me that those who make the comments that do upset another person ALWAYS see the problem as being the other persons lack of something, and NEVER that their comments are now out of date, or may really be upsetting to some.

The fault can never be theirs.

Still remember the pranks pulled on me when I first started working.

Like being caned in school relentlessly, toughened me up for reality of life.

Marking students mistakes with green pen, I think is going a bit too soft.

There is nothing precious about treating people with respect. No one has to harden up and cop crude comments from people they barely know.

It is not so much what is said but who is saying it. If people are friends or are comfortable in each other's company then they say most things because they do not feel threatened because they know the person. When some creep just rattles off a bit of crude schoolboy humour then I understand why some people, especially women, feel intimidated and humiliated.

All this "in my day we just laughed it off" is totally false. In "my day", if someone said something out of line, swore or made sexual innuendo to the women then usually a father, brother, partner, or all three, would give them a flogging. In my experience, creeps generally pick their mark as not only are they lacking in class they certainly are in courage.

Sorry Ray, been busy and missed your question. This "alphabet crowd" stuff is ridiculous, in my opinion.

If you have XY chromosomes you're male.

If you have XX chromosomes you're female.

No amount of messing around with claimed "genders", or playing the "alphabet crowd" tune ever will change this.

As far as I'm concerned they're all QCs anyway, but I am old and maybe I'm set in my ways?

But huge numbers of people are not happy unless they're sad and have some perceived slight to bleat about, or demand an apology for. Cheers.
