Home schooling

Has any member of this forum been home-schooled? If so, how did you turn out? Was this even possible in our day?

Homeschooling skyrockets in Queensland in wake of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-01-22/homeschool-surges-queensland-post-pandemic-restrictions/102015880

Figures show homeschooling rates have skyrocketed in Australia since the onset of the pandemic, with restrictions giving many families a taste of learning at the kitchen table.

In Queensland, homeschool registrations surged from 3,411 in 2019 to 10,048 in 2023.

The most dramatic shift was in secondary school where registrations had increased by more than 260 per cent over the past five years.

There are believed to be thousands more illegally unregistered students who fly under the radar.

I did Correspondence school when living on farms in the 60's so I suppose that's classified as home schooling.
But in them there days you would be up about 6am, do your days school work then jump on the tractor so the old man could go and do other jobs around the farm.
Never affected me as far as academic wise. Same as what you were taught in an ordinary school only your Mum was the teacher, so no teacher's pet. Do your work or get a slap on the arse.

My niece & nephew went to private schools. Just happened to be in Europe for a few months with them.

They were there at a young age, both their schools said they will learn more from the travel experience than the extra time in school. I didn't complete year 12 & I agree with their school's attitude.

I took them around the business class lounge to show them what they can aspire to. They got on their cattle class Qantas flight & I go on my Emirates business class flight.

I love my relatives, but a different aeroplane & on a different deck cements the relationship in many ways!

P.S. Couldn't get my nephew to walk down the Eiffel Tower which I had done at his age, he needed another year of outback experience. Shopping centre lifts have corrupted him.

P.P.S. I was waiting for them at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower, was quicker to walk down than use the lift, & I didn't run.

Real life experience has a lot of immeasurable value.

I know quite a few people who were home schooled and they were all pretty clever.

One in particular, was educated at home on the family copra plantation on a Pacific Island in our region. She completed what was in those days known as the Leaving Certificate which one sat for in Year 5 of high school. She went on to university and did an Arts/Law/Commerce degree and obtained first class honours in each degree. She was a few years ahead of me at university and I just presumed she must have been a few years older. It was only in later years that I learned more about her. She could speak, read and write both English and French before the age of five.  She sat for and obtained her matriculation just before her 14th birthday and had graduated with three degrees, all with honours, just before her 19th birthday, an age when we were all just starting.

She had two birth certificates. One was her real one and the other was, as she put it, "the one for educational purposes".

A very intelligent, kind and worldly person without ever stepping one foot inside a school class room.

School is not just about academic study. It is also about social development. Bullying builds character, so I'm told.

We homed schooled our daughter from age 12 to 16, then boarded her for the last 2 years in Armidale. She recently said her best time in school was home schooling, that she learnt more at home then anywhere else. She has degree, and is earning an excellent 6 figure salary, plus only after 2 years has paid off half of her home. It was a big effort for us, but as we both retired at 40 yo, and we took her in when she was 11yo at that age it was better for both of us to be home to share the teaching and the responsibility

Just because you dont sit in a classroom does not mean you dont have healthy interactions with others. There is sport, hobbies and general goofing around.

Other half was a distance teacher for a few decades. Pretty much all the students did very well with their education. With quite a few with extremely top end marks.

My parents had no schooling (it was interrupted by WW2), so I can't imagine how I would have coped with correspondence learning.
