Imprisonment..

Imprisonment in one's own rapidly shrinking brain is how a doctor described it to me. I wouldn't wish Dementia/Alzheimer's on my worst enemy. As the patient's brain slowly dies, they change physically and eventually forget who their loved ones are. Patients can eventually become bedridden, unable to move & unable to eat or drink. There will be people who will scroll by this message because Dementia/Alzheimer's has not touched them. They may not know what it's like to have a loved one who has led a battle against Dementia/Alzheimer's. For all the people I know, I ask a small favor... If you know someone who has battled with Dementia/Alzheimer's or is still struggling, families affected by this cruel illness as there is no cure and there are no survivors!.

Other half has dialysis 3 times a week. Leave home 2.30pm get back 9.00pm. also has dementia.

If the dementia was actually diagnosed they wouldn't have started dialysis!

It's great she is still here but it's challenging & when I can't get her to dialysis. It's about a 2 week window. She doesn't want to go into any form of care & if she does, it is patient transport to & from hospital 3 times a week.

We have it easy, there are others which also have diabetes & cancer as well.

Then the ones who are young enough to get a kidney transplant. I overhear complications in the dialysis ward. Talk about kidney transplant complications, frightening stuff.

Too many with multiple health issues.

The bulk of people in nursing homes have dementia. Things to look forward to!

If you haven't done it, get Ensuring Powered of Attorney & Enduring Guardian in place. These days you will have to take the person to the bank. Previously you didn't have to. Banks are covering their backsides.

Most libraries have a JP (internet has dates a JP is available) for certified copies, just bring copies with you that they can certify, plus the originals. Say for superannuation funds.

Don't know why I forgot but some are blind, hearing issues, osteoporosis & limbs missing due to complications.

One bloke with one leg gets out on his yacht every week. So there is some hope.

A horrid condition that almost affects everyone in some way or another in their lifetime.

I just happened to read this arrival yesterday and it sounds promising, being able to detect dementia before symptoms appear

I also saw a brief video from the team involved in the development. It does not diagnose dementia but identifies those with the proteins that are found in dementia cases, and thus those people have a much higher chance of developing it.

In advance I am about to share thoughts that some may find offensive ... Know that I am being as honest as i can and ABSOLUTELY not trying to be fey, overweening or any kind of Smart Arse.

My most poignant interactions with ..well I was just the orderly / bus driver ... What would I know? One old bloke , quite well off but apparently no longer capable of functioning at home and hence , home he did not go. We yacked on happily about aircraft engines and geopolitics ..and th Old Sod corrected some of my misapprehensions.  I thought there must be some lacunae ? Some part of His mind that was still stitched together where the sleeves were raveling to the extent he had no home to go to?

The other was a widow with a memory window of about a half an hour (or did She?) ... She would ask; I am really enjoying this trip but where is my Husband ? He would have wanted to come along ... Where is he?  " Nurse says ... "Oh He is Dead" ... Then all the Histrionics ..."Oh How did it Happen ?" .." Oh he went Peacefully " ... etc and then this paroxysm of Grief... The Gracefull Reconciliation with Her Loss.  .. then ten minutes of quiet...

Then the whole Rinse and Repeat. ...

It is something to watch and the temptation is to mock. . At least My Mum didn't buggerise around... I say that like it is a good thing but who can judge and who really knows .. ?

Lord Have Mercy ...

A friend is a Dementia sufferer, his son explained it like this, Dementia is the tree and it's branches are the individual conditions that are all linked to this disease.
