Ten types of chat forum participants

There isnt one universally official list of exactly ten types of chat forum participants (searches for the phrase turn up similar but not identical archetypes from group chats, Twitter chats, focus groups, or general forums). However, online chat forums, message boards, and live discussion spaces have long inspired humorous, observational classifications of recurring user behaviors.

Heres a widely recognizable set of 10 common types youll spot in most chat forums (Reddit threads, Discord servers, old-school BBS, or modern community boards). These are satirical composites drawn from years of internet culture:

1.  The Lurker
Reads every post, knows all the drama and inside jokes, but almost never contributes. Theyre the silent majorityuntil one day they drop a bombshell reply out of nowhere.

2.  The Troll
Lives to provoke reactions. Posts deliberately inflammatory takes, bait questions, or edgy memes just to watch the thread explode. Bonus points if they claim it was just a joke when called out.

3.  The Expert / Know-It-All
Has (or claims to have) deep knowledge on the topic. Corrects spelling, cites sources, and drops actually replies. Helpful until they gatekeep or talk down to everyone else.

4.  The Newbie / Noob
Asks the question thats been answered 47 times in the pinned FAQ. They usually get polite help the first time and savage sarcasm the fifth.

5.  The Spammer / Self-Promoter
Every post is subtly (or not-so-subtly) advertising their blog, YouTube, OnlyFans, crypto project, or DM me for details. Often uses multiple accounts.

6.  The Flame Warrior / Debater
Turns every discussion into a battlefield. Will argue for hours about the tiniest detail and never concedes a point. Thread derailer extraordinaire.

7.  The Helper / Contributor
The hero of the forum. Answers questions patiently, shares resources, welcomes new users, and keeps threads on track. Every community relies on these folks.

8.  The Meme Lord / GIF Guru
Communicates almost exclusively in reaction images, memes, and emojis. Can convey an entire paragraphs worth of sarcasm with one perfectly timed GIF.

9.  The Eternal Complainer
Nothing is ever good enough: This forum used to be great, Mods are useless, The new update ruined everything. They stick around anyway to complain more.

10.  The Social Butterfly / Greeter
Treats the forum like a virtual lounge. Says hi to everyone by name, starts off-topic side chats, organizes meetups, and tries to turn strangers into friends. The glue that keeps the community alive (or chaotic).

Youll often see hybrids (e.g., a Lurker-Troll who only emerges to stir trouble once a month) or the rare Moderator archetype who floats above it all trying to keep the peace.
