If you research the consensus on those raids it is only a drop in the ocean with whats really going on and how effective they really are. Need I remind you that illicit cigarette sales are now higher that legit ones. The drug issues has found that the drugs getting past law enforcement officers is greater than what they are catching. More people are taking drugs than there has been and the number of alcohol users has reduced in favor of drugs.

There is a common denominator there.
The bulk of that trouble has been imported from overseas.

Basically agree with that rmoor. In the early years Brits, Italians, Greeks who came here were of the same beliefs from a religious point of view. Assimilation was not a problem.When you bring in folks who's beliefs are contrary to ours, who will never assimilate, who's laws stipulate stoning and whipping as a punishment, who want to invoke their own law, you don't need to have a high Mensa score to realise that there will be problems.

Not all of these migrants are bad, far from it, but the ones that have the power are the ones that call the tune. Is it too late to shut the door? probably is but cutting immigration totals would be good start, and being selective in which countries are allowed.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Sadly, many people become quite hysterical and preach doom and gloom at every opportunity. If one looks at facts instead of the opinion of main stream media and social media, the results are quite the opposite.

According to the Government statisticians, homicide rates have dropped by more than 50% since their peak between 1970 and 2000. Property crime and motor vehicle theft has dropped more than 60% and assaults and crimes of violence at pretty much the same rate. What has shown an increase is crimes of a sexual nature and domestic violence mainly due to more people being able to report these allegations and proper investigations being made. It was only in the last decade or so that a wife or partner alleging assault was fobbed off by police as it was "only a domestic matter". Children and women were ignored when they made allegations about improper treatment by an adult.

Have a look at some of the crimes committed in Australia between say the4 late 1950s and 2000. In no particular order we had the kidnap and murder of Graeme Thorne, the Beaumont children disappearance, the Wanda Beach murders, the Truro and Snow Town murders, Anita Cobby rape and murder, Ivan Milat and the backpacker murders, Martin Bryant at Port Arthur and Bilal Skaf, just to highlight a few. These were not just a few loveable larrikins up to a bit of hi jinx. They were dreadful, violent people.

The notion that when we were younger we all left our windows open and keys in the car is absolute tripe. I remember what the times were like and my old dad was the local copper. Tell him and others of his era that yarn and watch the response. It is a bit like the twelve mile walk to school and every fight in the pub ending with shaking hands, buying each other a beer and being best friends for the rest of your life tale.

I remember just a few short years ago we would hear about crime in the NT and Qld every day from the same news source pushing their agenda. Since their party of choice has been elected, well, it is no longer mentioned.

I think Australia is a very safe place and I think we have some very fine, law biding people as immigrants. Of course there will always be bad ones, that is just what society is.

I think the fear of crime is greater today than it ever was. The other game changer is cybercrime. Criminals no longer need to target bricks-and-mortar banks.

Dmaxer, good to see that you have returned to the fold. I note where you are coming from in your post and, what you say is largely correct.

There will always be criminal elements in society always have been but it's how we cope with it that worries a lot of folks. There would not be many people who would say that our bail laws are not in need of an overhaul. Reoffending whilst on bail is almost a daily occurrence.

Could it be that stiffer sentences might help deter the teenage crimewave that we are currently experiencing?

Those stats were taken from Government Statisticians you say.
With the amount of lies and distortions the incumbent government kick out, one would have to express doubt and disbelief at those figures.

Besides, there are at least 3 Western Sydney gangsters shot dead every week and a couple more in Melbourne.

That in itself opens up the question the stats you provided are likely to be wildly inaccurate.

There might have been 200 or 300 homicides per annum at various stages in the 70s to 90s, but that could possibly be around 500+ now.
Percentages are not always the most accurate guide.

Also, it appears you are not painting the full picture DMaxer, you are in fact distorting the facts.
I looked up those stats and the 55% decrease occurred ONLY when full Covid restrictions were on in 20/21.
No-one could venture out to commit homicides at that time.

DMaxer, it would be a good thing if you didn't try to keep pulling the wool over our eyes with pro-selective information.

Worlwide, the stats show a general trend to reduced homicide rates. Recently Australia has been showing an opposite trend.

Based on percentage of population, from the all time low in 2017/2018 there has been an increase of almost 24%. From the Covid period as quoted by DMaxer, to the latest reported figures (2024/2025), the rate has increased by about 17%, confirming the rising trend.

In those same years the US has has shown a dramatic drop of 30%, to the lowest in 70 years (1956). The first half of 2026 is showing an even greater percentage drop so will easily make a new historical low since records began in 1900.

Anyone who has studied statistics, as I did in high school, will know that statistical interpretations can be manipulated simply by choosing a baseline that supports your desired outcome. Moreover, when dealing with datasets, we should be mindful of trends, rather than blips. That's where standard deviation comes into play.

The probability of being murdered by a complete stranger, eg a terrorist, was 27% higher in 2019-20 than it was in 2024-25, but 50% lower in 2015-16. Go down the columns and you'll see the numbers going up and down in successive years. Interestingly, the likelihood of being murdered by an acquaintance in 2024-25 is lower than every other year all the way back to 1989-90.

AWL, if you had chosen 2016-17 as your base year instead of 2017-18, your conclusion would have been completely different. But of course that would not have suited your agenda.

Possibly cameras, improvements in DNA technology and advances in vehicles where some motor vehicle events are treated as homicides have an effect on stats also.

Plus the huge push in recent years with domestic violence also one would think would have a beneficial effect.

Only problem is the record a true representation of actual or is it trying to tell a certain story or outcome. Who, what, when, why can vary outcomes. My perceptions? Reports are every day and seem to be a certain type of crime in certain suburbs.
