Travel from Kuranda to Cairns

Hi, I am intending to take my Pajero and 18 Ft van from Kuranda to Cairns. I have driven it once without a van and remember it as being very steep. Is it advisable to do this with a van or is there an alternative route that I should be considering. Thanks in advance.

Walcha hwy is still closed during the day for traffic, so we are looking at going via coffs.
